What do I put in Industry on LinkedIn?
Do You Know What Industry You’re Listed Under on LinkedIn?
When you first set up your LinkedIn account, you probably selected an industry. But when was the last time you checked if it’s still accurate?
In the past, LinkedIn let you scroll through a dropdown list to pick the best option. Now, you have to almost guess what might be an industry and start typing.
Not sure what options exist?
LinkedIn’s industries are based on Microsoft’s official list. Have a look through and decide what is the best option for you.
Why Your Industry Matters.
Your industry field is more than just a label. It’s a market value filter used in paid searches by recruiters and sales professionals. If you’re job hunting, having the right industry selected helps the right people find you.
How to Check & Update Your Industry:
1. Go to your LinkedIn profile
2. Click the edit pencil in the top section
3. Scroll down to Industry
4. Click the dropdown and start typing keywords related to your field
5. Select the most relevant option from the list
Thinking about switching careers?
You might want to update your industry to reflect the field you’re aiming for.
A Hidden LinkedIn Quirk…
Sometimes LinkedIn updates its industry list, but your profile keeps the old, outdated version. This means you won’t show up in searches for your field, so it’s worth checking now!
