Are you a student (or parent of a student) who is wondering how to get that first job?
Your school/college/university will probably be offering you some support, but you could also think about working with a career coach.
It’s often a stressful time, but in my experience lots of students have the same worries and concerns, and find that talking to someone independent can be really helpful.
I’ve recently been running sessions called “LinkedIn Secrets for Smart Students”, in both 1:1 and group settings. I use my experience as a career coach and my in depth LinkedIn knowledge to show you how to get your profile sorted, and how to find the people you need to be engaging with to help you get started on your career.
You may have a really clear idea of what you want to do, in which case, we can drill down in detail about how to find roles, what kind of content you should be engaging with, finding learning opportunities and thinking about what and how to post your own content (but if that freaks you out, don’t worry, you don’t have to post to get what you want our of LinkedIn).
If you have no idea what you want to do, or you have a few ideas, then that’s no problem, we can talk about that and how you might get started on making your LinkedIn account work for you.
My advice to most students is to try not to worry too much, easier said than done I know. You will learn something from whatever role you have as your first role – even if it’s that you wouldn’t ever manage like that, or you hate sales, or that you love marketing.
You really need to be on LinkedIn. And you need to connect to people. Connect to your parents, your friends, their parents, your parents friends, your teachers/lecturers (probably once you’ve left rather than whilst still their student). Tell people what you’re looking for. People like to help people generally.
If you’re interested in booking a session with me, then have a look below at the contents of my ‘Secrets of LinkedIn for smart students’. It’s likely your parents, lecturers or teachers have told you that you need an account here. They’re right, you do.
But, having an account and not using it properly is like having a gym membership and never going.

Michaela – Parent who sat in on a session with student:
“Sarah’s LinkedIn Secrets for Smart Students sessions are fantastic. My YP has to find a 6 week placement as part of their 2nd year at university so Sarah’s session felt like the perfect way to start. Sarah is very personable and engaging, and is highly knowledgeable on all things LinkedIn. She talks you through every aspect of both your LinkedIn profile and how to use LinkedIn to research and build your network, with loads of top tips on how to use LinkedIn to maximum effect. We highly recommend Sarah – these sessions really should be part of the curriculum – they are so important in helping young people start out in the workplace. “
